Nutrition During Breastfeeding

Eat nutritiously while breastfeeding. A healthy diet with extra nutrition will help you supply plenty of milk for baby.
Eat a well balanced diet of a variety of proteins, fruits, vegetables, breads and cereals, and milk products.
Eat about 500 more calories per day than you did before pregnancy. (200 more calories per day than you consumed during pregnancy.)
Be sure to get at least 1000 milligrams of calcium per day either through your diet or supplement. That would be equal to about 3 cups of milk per day.
You will need 4 servings of protein per day.
Folic acid is also important. You may need to continue to take your prenatal vitamin daily.
Drink plenty of fluids — about eight glasses per day to ensure adequate milk supply for your baby.
Watch for foods that may bother your baby. Fussiness, diarrhea, congestion or a rash may be a sign of an allergic reaction.
